Shooting Broadcast Quality Footage Without That Big Broadcast Budget

by: Panasonic Pro Video TeamNo Comments|February 3, 2012

Roger Williams, head of his own corporate video production company (Roger Williams Media) in Phoenix, Arizona, was used to working with low-budget broadcast camera equipment on a variety of corporate video projects. When Williams began shooting corporate video blogs, or vlogs, for the Law Offices of David Michael an especially high-profile criminal defense attorney who was used to the look and feel of an authentic television broadcast station, he knew they would need a new professional grade, high-quality camcorder.

For filmmakers like Williams, with small to moderately sized production companies, purchasing a high-quality camcorder is a huge investment. Williams needed his work to look as much as if it were shot in a Hollywood studio as possible, but at a low price.

Enter Panasonic’s AG-AF100 camera. With its manageable size, form factor and interchangeable lenses, Williams had a feeling the camcorder might be the solution to shooting high-quality footage on a low budget. But Williams did his research. Not only did he take his time to select the right camera for the job, but Williams even brought in lighting specialists to help set-up a studio and purchased lavalier microphones to accentuate the professional presentation.

“We actually brought in a Hollywood studio lighting guy; he helped us to set-up three video studios, using Plexiglass to get the F-Stops down.” said Williams. “Our studio set-up, combined with the mobility, and incredibly professional look of the AF100 camera, helped us to create what you would otherwise assume is an actual television broadcast news station set.”

Targeted at the video and film production communities, the AF100 has a shallow depth of field and wider field of view of a large imager, with the flexibility and cost advantages of use with a growing line of professional quality, industry standard micro 4/3-inch lenses, filters, and adapters. “This [AF100] affordable, digital cinematography camera plays a crucial role here at Roger Williams Media. The camera really maximizes the potential of its high-resolution imager, which is huge for us.”

Since utilizing the AG-AF100 Williams has convinced David to also vlog about Cantor Law Group a family law practice. The most recent venture has been Cantor Art a website focused on covering the Phoenix local art scene. “The form factor of the AF100 makes it really easy to transport and setup in tight gallery spaces. We can get in and get the shots quickly and easily.”
