L.A. County Arboretum Increases Productivity with Unified Communications System

The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is a 127-acre botanical garden and historical site jointly operated by the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. Located in the city of Arcadia, the unique Arboretum is home to plant collections from all over the world, including many rare and endangered species. It also houses outdoor historical landmarks representative of the major phases of California history. 

After the installation, Datafone Communications president Kevin Kinsey stated that he had never seen a customer as happy as they were. 

When the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanic Garden was looking to upgrade its existing telephone system, it searched for one that was up-to-date, easy to use and versatile. With the Arboretum’s existing system, in order to change auto attendant or voicemail settings the organization was required to file a formal request with a third party–a process that was both cumbersome and lengthy, taking up to a month to implement. The Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation issued a proposal request for a new phone system, and out of the six companies who submitted bids, Panasonic emerged as the Foundation’s top choice.

Datafone Communications, a full-service communications service provider, assisted the Los Angeles Arboretum with the installation of the Panasonic KX-TDE200 system, a converged IP-PBX system that supports up to 256 total extensions and 128 CO lines, as well as the KX-TVA200 voice processing system with 12 ports. Datafone also installed a series of Panasonic digital telephones including the KX-DT343, KX-DT333 and KX-DT321 totaling 44 extensions throughout the Arboretum’s six building facility.

After the installation, Datafone Communications president Kevin Kinsey stated that he had never seen a customer as happy as they were. Historically, incoming calls were automatically directed to the auto attendant. With the Panasonic system in place, callers are typically greeted with a live person and if he staff is unable to answer, the call is then directed to voicemail.”

Installation of the Panasonic system was hassle-free due to its ability to use cabling from the Arboretum’s existing system. Other systems would have required new cabling upon installation, but the Panasonic system saved the non-profit from these added expenses. The installation process took less than an hour and was conducted during the normal course of business. Additionally, the new system was installed in the Arboretum’s conference facility storage room, where temperatures reach up to 100º F. While competing vendors required air conditioning as part of their solution, Panasonic was confident that its system could withstand the heat, validating the Foundation’s decision in choosing the company.

Flexible enough to integrate into different departments, the Panasonic system also enabled employees to add features as needed. The voicemail-to-email feature made message retrieval and playback easier and more convenient for traveling or remote workers. Immediately after installation, the Arboretum was empowered to make instant changes to its auto attendant and voicemail systems, allowing the organization to more efficiently serve its customers.
